Theatre Baton Rouge

Theatre Baton Rouge’s Mission is to provide the residents of the Greater Baton Rouge Area the opportunity to participate in quality live theatre as an audience member, actor or production worker. Recognizing theatre as a living reflection of the human imagination and experience, TBR serves as the region’s pivotal theatre arts organization providing ongoing cultural, educational and social enrichment.

TBR offers more than 150 theatrical performances, workshops, classes and special events each year. TBR’s audience is truly a regional one. Over 30,000 people attend TBR each season from the eleven-parish Capital Area as well as the larger south Louisiana/southern Mississippi region. Committed to bringing the best in live theater to the Greater Baton Rouge Area, Theatre Baton Rouge offers the community the opportunity to participate in the theatrical process – theatre for the community, by the community.

Seating approximately 327 patrons, the Main Stage Theatre is the venue for our much celebrated Capital Series. Located in the main building, the Main Stage combines the intimacy of a small house while having the production capabilities of a larger professional theatre. Rows are lettered A through Q, so every location is equivalent to sitting in the front orchestra of a much larger house. Works by such acclaimed writers as Noel Coward, Tom Stoppard, Chuck Mee and Tennessee Williams exemplify TBR’s commitment to providing a wide range of theatrical experiences. In addition, TBR has been at the forefront of regional premieres, from the 1985 production of A Chorus Line, to Rent in 2010, Les Miserables in 2013, to this season'sYoung Frankenstein. Musical comedy to drama, farce to mystery, the Main Stage Season has something for everyone.

TBR’s 99-seat Studio is truly an actor’s space. The Studio, home of TBR’s City Series, presents exciting and innovative works in an intimate setting, giving our actors and audience a unique communal experience. The flexible space features newly configured stepped stadium seating that allows excellent sight lines from all seats for a unique theatrical event.
Among others, plays by Athol Fugard, Edward Albee and David Hare, along with the tongue-in-cheek musical Urinetown have been featured to critical acclaim. The Studio is more than just another production space, however. Its intimate, no-frills arrangement is ideally suited for workshops of new pieces as well as a wide variety of staged readings. Over the years The Studio has helped TBR fulfill its commitment to the larger community by opening its doors to other theatre and performance companies in the area, some recently formed, others well-established, in turn nurturing the arts as a whole through mutual support and partnership.

TBR’s educational programs are anchored by a comprehensive series of summer camps, seasonal classes and the Young Actors Program taught by professional instructors. Summer camps feature musical and play production components as well as opportunities geared to young children, high school student, adults and senior citizens. TBR’s classes focus on acting/performance, auditioning, film and television acting, theatre design and storytelling. The Young Actors Program fuses education with application as students present a fully-realized musical production for the general public.

Additionally, TBR engages the community through broad-based outreach activities including post-performance discussions and ASL interpreted performances for the hearing impaired. In recent years, TBR has partnered with Youth ALIVE, City at Peace, Girl Scouts of America and Big Buddy to bring theatre to a new generation and community.

Theatre for the community, by the community. The award-winning Theatre Baton Rouge is one of oldest and largest community theatres in the nation.
